If you work within the gas and plumbing industry, no doubt you’ll be aware of the Gas Safe Register and its legal importance.

The Gas Safe Register is the official list of gas businesses and engineers registered to work safely and legally on gas appliances. It’s the approval stamp everyone looks for when searching for a gas engineer or business and by law all gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register.

How do I become Gas Safe Registered?

Before being able to apply you’ll need relevant qualifications that show your competence.

Gas Safe Registration Requirements

There are very specific courses to become Gas Safe Registered and evidence that the Gas Safe Register accepts.

  1. ACS (Accredited Certification Scheme)

The Nationally Accredited Certification Scheme is generally referred to as ACS. ACS Gas Training Courses ensure that individuals are assessed against units of competency and best working practice. Once complete the ACS units are valid for 5 years, which after that time you must renew and be reassessed.

ACS is only available for experienced gas engineers. It will allow you to gain certificates of competence that are accepted by Gas Safe Register.

  1. NVQ (National Vocational Qualification)

If you have no industry experience or are just starting to think about joining the industry, you may need to follow a more formal qualification route such as Gas Services NVQs including;

  • The installation and maintenance of natural gas (Level 2 and 3)
  • Appliance pathway routes
  • Emergency service operations

Applying for registration

When you apply for registration with the Gas Safe Register you will be given a three-month probationary registration status. The means your business is fully registered and you’ll be able to carry out gas work, but you must carry out specific requirements laid out during this period.

Being Gas Safe Registered

Once registered, your place on the Gas Safe Register is valid for 12 months meaning you’ll need to renew year on year.
