Jack Staples, 17, from Norton has a clear passion for apprenticeships and has found his footing at Wernick Group, Britain’s largest independent manufacturer and hirer of portable and modular accommodation.
An Apprentice Yard Operative, Jack joined Wernick Group within 5 days of applying to PM Training. Being the third apprentice the local depot have taken on in the last four years, his dedication is something that immediately stood out for Jan Slater, Depot Manager.
She said: "He is mature and picks things up quickly. He catches two buses to get in at 7.30am and is always on time.
We wanted an apprentice with specific skills, a high level of Maths and English and someone who can use their initiative, Jack ticks all the boxes and has taken to spraying cabins really quickly, and that is an art - it's not easy to pick up."
Jack's dedication started at College doing a Barbering Apprenticeship but after two years he wanted to explore his passion for working outdoors.
He said: "I wanted to do an apprenticeship where I could earn more qualifications and I love that I can earn and learn at the same time."
Jack is learning to drive and hopes to pass his test in May after which he'll be able to do a lot more.
Jan continues: "Once Jack can drive he'll be doing his Forklift Truck qualification and his CSCS card training meaning he can go out on site and see jobs through from start to finish. His ability to take on tasks is a testament to his personal drive."
Wernick Group have seen the value in recruiting apprentices and their depot in Newcastle-under-Lyme was the first depot in the UK to recruit an apprentice.
Jan continues: "Apprentices provide us with a dedicated employee that can be mentored by our more experienced staff. Our Site Managers enjoy coaching and passing on new skills whilst they earn and learn. It has been a way that we can grow our business and provide new career opportunities to young people."
