Read how Chelsea Mincher, 20, started an apprenticeship and found her way into a career in health and social care.

Chelsea started at PM Training on the Officeworks and Careworks programmes that help young people and school leavers gain employment. The Careworks programme provides a spring board into the health and social care sector with relevant work experience. The course is aimed at school leavers and focuses on core employability skills such as timekeeping, behaviour and communication.

How did you start your career?

“I was at PM Training and I started on a four week trial with Home Instead Senior Care.

“They hadn’t taken on an apprentice before, but it worked out well, and I’ve been here for seven years. At the start, there were just three people in the business so I’ve seen it grow and change and I have learnt a lot along the way.”

Tell us a bit about your job?

“I started as an apprentice but now I manage the assignment of jobs to our 55 care givers.

“It is a complex job, staff have a variety of work patterns and we pride ourselves on maintaining continuity, ensuring that our Clients get the Caregivers they are familiar and comfortable with.”

What advice would you give to other young people starting their careers?

“I would recommend an apprenticeship as you get to learn about many aspects of a business and it is a great way to start a long-lasting career. I started as an apprentice and now I really enjoy my job and feel valued by the management team.”

The Careworks programme is a unique work experience programme for school leavers aged 16-18. The course provides you with a springboard and the employability skills needed to progress into a successful career in the health and social care sector. If you are looking for a career in health and social care, this short course provides you with work experience that will look great on your CV.
