PM Training ambassador, Andy Wilkinson, shares his thoughts on the pressures of GCSE Results Day and how doing what you enjoy is the main focus for a career...
I didn't really like doing exams. I don't think many people do. I didn't do too badly in my GCSEs - gaining Bs in Science and PE, then Ds in everything else. But in all honesty, I was more concerned with my football.
The sport was my focus. It was the way I wanted to go and I made, what I believed at the time were, the best decisions to achieve my aim.
Looking back, I probably should have thought things through more than I did as I'd left myself with little to fall back on, but that is what this guest post is about.
Over the past couple of years, a lot more opportunities have become available than when I was leaving school.
"While it doesn't hurt to have a great education, things have changed when it comes to alternative ways of learning."
When the Stoke City FC Academy took me on, although I was thrilled, the only option offered to me alongside training for my football career, was a BTEC in Science.
Today, possibilities for young people are endless despite their grades at GCSE.
While it doesn't hurt to have a great education, things have changed when it comes to alternative ways of learning.
Being able to trial different areas of work, having the opportunity to earn a wage while getting hands-on experience, and discovering what you actually enjoy is a great way to choose a career.
Things might not have worked out completely for me in my sporting career, but what drove me was that focus - I may not have been the best player, but I was the one who wanted it the most, and I achieved it.
No matter what you get in your results today, just remember - there are so many options out there for you. Find what you enjoy doing, use it as your focus, and put your mind to it to achieve it.
You can do it.
