THE STORY BEHIND THE PRODUCTION

This production is a memorial piece to the late Brian Tomkins. The 70-year-old had represented Loggerheads and Whitmore on Newcastle Borough Council, served nine years as the chairman of Aspire Housing, and was a member of Newcastle-based Lyme Valley Cycling Club. Brian suffered a cardiac arrest and sadly passed away after completing a 30-mile bike ride. The production of this memorial was donated by Realise charity.

MAKING THE BICYCLES

Artworks Manager, Phil Brown researched ways of constructing the image of the cyclists with help from Brians wife, Cherry.

The production was soon underway with help from apprentice Luke Steadman. The sculptures stand at 8ft tall and can be seen on the roundabout on Whitmore Road.

“He dedicated a great deal of his time to the community and he was a very special man. What you saw was exactly what you got"

Cherry Tomkins, wife of late Brian Tomkins.
