SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURS

A career in manufacturing, mechanical or engineering can use a range of skills. Employers usually seek a generic skill set within this role which would include: 

  • knowledge of maths
  • the ability to use, repair and maintain machines and tools
  • knowledge of building and construction
  • to be thorough and pay attention to detail
  • the ability to use your initiative
  • physical skills like movement, coordination and dexterity
  • knowledge of manufacturing production and processes
  • the ability to accept criticism and work well under pressure
  • to be able to carry out basic tasks on a computer or hand-held device

A career in this trade area is hard work but is incredibly rewarding and you will be able to earn a comfortable wage with lots of room to progress. You can also continue to boost your apprenticeship knowledge along your career!

CAREER PATH AND PROGRESSION

There are so many routes of progression within these trade areas you could see yourself working as a clinical engineer creating equipment to treat patients, an aerospace engineer working on the latest spacecraft and satellites or even have your own company going self-employed as a window fabricator. 

There are so many routes you can take with manufacturing, mechanical and engineering!
